Telefono Rosa was created in February 1988 as a temporary research instrument designed to uncover the “hidden” violence not appearing in health service or police reports and as told directly from the voices of its female victims.   In a single room, five volunteers with the help of paper and pen listened to stories from women callers throughout Italy.  It was this attentive and united effort that qualified Telefono Rosa as a new form of social service from its very start.

In order to combat and prevent violence, it is fundamental to defuse the very mechanisms that trigger it.  It is for this purpose that over the years we have promoted conventions, initiatives, and public service campaigns in addition to our direct commitment to those in difficult situations.

The Association’s activities were recognized by registration in the Second Section – Social Services of the Albo del Volontariato della Regione Lazio (Lazio Region Roll of Volunteers) on 25 November 1993 as well as in the Registry of Entities and Associations that provide activities for immigrants at the Ministry of Labour and Social Policies, Directorate General for Immigration in September 2004.

In 2006, "Telefono Rosa - Onlus" became a legal entity.
Currently, the Associazione Nazionale Volontarie del Telefono Rosa Onlus is a network of territorial associations. The headquarters are located in Rome and the association boasts a collaboration of 60 volunteers, 12 criminal and civil attorneys registered in the special support Register at the expense of the State, 8 psychologists, 12 cultural mediators of diverse nationalities, and 2 bank officers.  Consultations are free of charge.
